Letter to Ealing councillors ahead of Wednesday 25th Jan cabinet meeting - how you can take action!

CALL TO ACTION: The council is debating the future of Warren Farm Nature Reserve at a cabinet meeting this Wednesday 25th January 2023, which will be live streamed on YouTube via the Ealing Council channel here. Beginning at 7pm with Warren Farm being the very last item on the agenda up for discussion. The council are proposing to take over half of #WarrenFarmNR for sports development which would cause our already rewilded meadow to be destroyed and for Ealing to lose it’s only breeding Skylarks. We have sent a letter voicing our serious concerns to all councillors attending, which you can read below.

We believe the council should adhere to the results of their own Public Consultation which was overwhelming in favour of safeguarding the site for wildlife and enjoyment of nature, with activities already taking here such as walking, running and cycling. We also want the council to deliver on their Biodiversity Action Plan and their Climate and Ecological Emergency promises.

It is both saddening and frustrating that we have to speak up this loudly for the green spaces and wildlife we love, but future generations will live with the decisions we make about the environment today, so please take action - YOUR VOICE COUNTS!

3 THINGS YOU CAN DO TODAY to help protect Warren Farm NR against this devastating threat of biodiversity loss in our borough.

  1. CONTACT YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLORS: Make sure your local councillors are fully informed about the issue, and know your views. If you don’t know who your councillors are, this website makes it easy to email them:https://www.writetothem.com/

  2. RESPOND TO THE LOCAL PLAN: You have until 8th February 2023 to respond to the Council’s Local plan for Ealing. The easiest way to do this is email your views to: localplan@ealing.gov.uk

  3. SIGN THE PETITION: The petition to protect Warren Farm with Local Nature Reserve status has over 14,800 signatures, but we need more! You can sign and share here.

SHORT OF TIME?  Here’s what we think about Ealing Councils plans for Warren Farm NR, you could cut and paste if you find it helpful:

  • SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY (as acknowledged in the Local Plan’s Site Selection Report)

  • LOSS OF PUBLICLY-ACCESSIBLE GREEN SPACE (as acknowledged in the Local Plan’s Site Selection Report)

  • LOSS OF REWILDED MEADOW HABITAT - HOME TO ENDANGERED SPECIES

  • LOSS OF BOROUGH’S ONLY BREEDING SKYLARKS (as acknowledged in the council’s Biodiversity Action Plan)

  • THE DEVELOPMENT WOULD BE AT ODDS WITH EALING COUNCIL’S OWN CLIMATE AND ECOLOGICAL STRATEGY AND WOULD BE SEVERELY COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE GIVEN THE CURRENT CLIMATE EMERGENCY AND THE COUNCIL’S OWN BIODIVERSITY COMMITMENTS

Thank you! Together, let’s make it happen!
